Why Choose North County Foot & Ankle Specialists
Custom Orthotics
For early-stage bunions, custom molded orthotics can slow progression, relieve pressure, and in some cases reduce symptoms enough to prevent the need for surgery altogether. After a surgical correction, they help maintain proper alignment so the results hold. Our hand-crafted inserts are molded to your foot's exact shape, making them effective at every stage of treatment.
Triplanar Correction Surgery
Most bunion surgeries only address the deformity in one or two planes, which is why so many come back. Drs. Jason Morris and Avanti Redkar perform triplanar correction using 3D imaging and a minimal incision approach, rotating the bone back into proper alignment so the bunion stays corrected.
Board-Certified Podiatric Specialists
Both of our doctors are board-certified podiatrists. Dr. Morris is also a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons with residency training in complex reconstructive procedures. Dr. Redkar brings fellowship training in sports medicine and ankle reconstruction. Together, they cover every angle of bunion care.
You Deserve to Walk Without Pain
Bunions don't shrink on their own, and waiting only gives the deformity more time to progress. If pain is keeping you from the activities you enjoy, or if the thought of surgery has kept you from seeking help, know that our board-certified podiatrists at North County Foot & Ankle Specialists in Escondido, CA, offer both surgical and nonsurgical solutions designed around your comfort and your goals.
Before and After Bunion Treatment

What Is a Bunion?
- Bunions are deformities formed when your front foot bones become misaligned, a condition known as hallux valgus.
- The misaligned bones make the top half of your big toe point inward toward your second toe.
- Tendons then tighten, pulling the toe further inward.
- This causes the bottom joint of your big toe to bulge outward. The bulge is the actual bunion.
- Factors such as tight shoes, arthritis, toe injuries, foot injuries, or birth defects can cause bunions to grow.

Solutions for Bunion Pain
Board-certified podiatric surgeons Jason Morris and Avanti Redkar are two of the top podiatrists in the greater San Diego, CA, region. They have successfully treated patients with bunions for over ten years with advanced treatments like:
Customized Orthotics
Our hand-made orthotics, worn in your shoes, are molded to the exact shape of your foot, correcting bone misalignments and relieving pain much better than pre-packaged, store-bought insoles.
Surgery
We perform state-of-the-art triplanar correction surgery using 3-D digital imaging and using a minimal incision approach. This procedure precisely rotates misaligned big toe bones back into place. A metal plate is then attached to the bones to keep them that way. Dr. Morris and Dr. Redkar focus on performing bunion surgery correctly the first time so that the deformities don't recur.
Combined Treatment
Dr. Morris and Dr. Redkar may recommend both surgery and custom orthotics to keep your foot pain-free and your bunion from growing back.

"Our caring physicians treat all aspects of foot and ankle pathology with advanced procedures and a 'patient first' approach."

Who Develops More Bunions: Men or Women?
According to Harvard Medical School
High Heels
The weight of your body forcibly pushes your toes forward into the shoe's tight, narrow front space, which can cause bone misalignment.
Pregnancy
Extra pregnancy weight can cause flat feet, which may make your feet roll inward while walking. This can move big toe bones out of alignment.
Can My Shoes Cause a Bunion?
The front section of shoes is called the toe box. If it's too tight, your toes will be jammed together, which can push your big toe joint out of alignment, creating a bunion. This is especially true with high heels.
If you already have a bunion due to arthritis or injury, a tight toe box can cause pain when you walk. Make sure there is space between your longest toe and the end of the toe box to prevent discomfort.
Switching to leather or canvas shoes can help relieve some bunion pain as the material has more "give" than rigid shoes. Some shoe stores can also stretch out the toe box to make the fit more comfortable.
